Ford has announced the comeback of their iconic fastback coupe that debuted in late 1960s for global Mustang enthusiasts with 5-0 liter V8 performance to claim the top spot in the lineup of world’s best selling sports cars. According to Mustang director Dave Pericak, “Ford Mustang Mach 1 will reward our most hardcore Mustang enthusiasts who demand that next level of power , precision and collectability”. He further added that “ like the original, the all-new Mustang Mach 1 will be true to its heritage, delivering great looks and as the most track capable 5.0- liter Mustang ever”.
As it is speculated previously, The Blue Oval has now confirmed it is readying a fast Ford Mustang Mach 1 performance flagship that could replace the Ford Mustang Bullitt, which will carve out its place in the Mustang lineup that range above the V8-powered GT but below the Shelby GT350 available in the US. “Mach 1 has always been the bridge between base Mustangs and the Shelby models,” said Ted Ryan, heritage brand manager, Ford Archives.
The new Mustang Mach 1 is likely a callback to the original 1969 Mustang Mach 1 which boasted enhanced performance and dynamics , created to slot into the Mustang lineup as a faster version of pony cars.In the following years ,the original Mach 1 acquired improved performance versus Mustang GT and was more attainable than Shelby and Boss variants. Two years after its debut, with an assortment of powerful engine options Mach 1 hit the streets in 1971 as its second comeback. In 1974, it was redesigned for the first time as a hatchback which enjoyed a five-year run. Mach 1 hit the roads again for 2003 and 2004 model years with improved on-road performance.Seventeen years later, this all new 2021 Mustang Mach 1 is set to roar back to life as the most track ready Mustang ever , with power likely to be wound up from 345kW to around 375kW.
The partially camouflaged version of new pony car undergoing track testing in the US , point out that this latest Mustang will come with revised front end styling that includes a new diamond-mesh grille with two large port-holes. And judging by the pictures, the most obvious difference is the Mach 1’s circular air inlets or foglight holes flanking the galloping horse emblem in the grille – a designer cue that’s said to pay homage to the original ’69 Mach 1. The redesigned lower half of the bumper with the addition of a prominent splitter hints the comprehensive aero updates of this new Mach 1.
At the rear, the bazooka sized quad exhaust pipes, the large spoiler, the bigger diffuser and the redesigned bumper , cement its performance credentials. Latest Mach 1 will come with bigger Brembo brakes caliper, hidden by a multispoke 19- inch wheel in which a high performance , ultra sticky Michelin Pilot Sport cup 2 tires measuring 305/30 at the front is wrapped around.
The Ford Mustang is set to debut this spring in the US and is expected to also be offered in Australia. Pricing has yet to be unveiled, but with all the speculations of this latest Mustang being the replacement of the Bullitt, the price will start somewhere around $80,000, which is about how much the Bullitt cost.
